But if you can get the engine replaced for less than $3800 and if you're emotionally attached to the truck I don't think it would be a BAD idea to keep it. Or for several more years after it is paid off.įinancially I think it makes more sense in the long run to buy another truck. And most likely won't spend a dime on repairs over the next 5 years. If you buy/trade for a newer 2017 in 5 years you will have a paid off 7 year old truck with less than 100,000 miles on it. An average of about $50/month for repairs on a truck that age is about what you should budget for. And you KNOW it won't go another 5 years without spending money on something else. If you keep the truck in 5 years you'll have a 27 year old truck with well over 300,000 miles on it. The $3800 divided over 5 years works out to over $60/month you'd have to spend anyway. That is a payment of $395/month and $1700 total interest, about $2100 less than the cost of a used engine installed. I can probably find a 2017 4X4 Access cab in my zip code for around $26K according to Subtract $4K from $26K and borrow $22K for 5 years at 3% interest. Lets say that your truck is worth $4K as is. ![]() With the interest rates available today you'll pay the bank a lot less in interest than you'd pay a mechanic. Sometimes it does make more sense to trade. ![]()
